There are so many things you can do with burlap. It's natural, flexible, holds its shape and just a pleasure to work with. I decided to make a container for various craft supplies and used the same technique I shared with you just recently here.
You will need:
burlap sack
interface (optional)
cotton or linen for lining
Before you start, I recommend washing your burlap sack - it gets nice and soft then.

1. Determine how big you want your container to be. Multiply the diameter by 3.14 and that will be your circumference - that's how wide your rectangular should be. Then determine the desired height of your container and add half of the diameter (radius) and add one inch for stitching. Mine was about 27" by 16". I used interface but burlap is quite stiff so feel free to skip this. Cut your lining to be the same size.

2. Sew side seams.

3. Place this side seam in the center.

4. Sew the bottom so it looks like brown paper bag. For more detailed instructions refer to my previous post here.

This is an awesome tutorial - thanks!!
Gorgeous!
Maybe you can help me - I have some actual burlap coffee sacks I washed once (which left a bit of a mess and the smell of raw coffee beans in my washer) I allowed them to sit outdoors in the sunshine for about 3 days and they STILL smell a bit musty. Is this just something I have to live with? And will the burlap soften more if I run it thru the dryer? TIA
Your tutorials are super and make me want a sewing machine even more!!! ;)
I love the result!
Jen,
My lovely man washed mine with fabric softener and we tried to dry some in the drier and some on the floor. I don't think the drier makes a big difference but if you do dry yours in the drier, take it out before it's completely dry or you will never straighten it.
Mine smells just a bit I it's not a bad smell at all.
Good luck!
how about washing it in traditional soap, and letting it dry pegged to the washing line on a windy day? (i know that sounds quite drastic ^^ )
I'm not sure where to find such a lovely burlap sack to work with. Any suggestions?
Kerri,
My partner's job often gives him access to ships so he got me several as they were just throwing them away. But I would recommend contacting bakeries or places where they rost coffee.
Wonderful Jenya! Now I know where to put all my yarn!!
Awesome tut! Thank you! :)
